    March First Movement – Samil Independence Movement

    March First Movement, also called Samil Independence Movement, series of demonstrations for Korean national independence from Japan that began on March 1, 1919, in the Korean capital city of Seoul and soon spread throughout the country. Before the Japanese finally suppressed the movement 12 months later, approximately 2,000,000 Koreans had participated in the more than 1,500 demonstrations. About 7,000 people were killed by the Japanese police and soldiers, and 16,000 were wounded; 715 private houses, 47 churches, and 2 school buildings were destroyed by fire. Approximately 46,000 people were arrested, of whom some 10,000 were tried and convicted.

    QISN HS Basketball Competition- 17th February, 2017

     

    On Friday 17th February 2017, WZIS sent a girls basketball team to compete in the annual QISN High School Basketball competition. This year the competition was hosted by Yew Chung International School (YCIS). This was an excellent venue and the students throughly enjoyed having the opportunity to play basketball against some of the other prestigious international schools in China.

    Some of the players that entered this years QISN Basketball competition, this was the first competition that they have competed in basketball. Students displayed a high level of sportsmanship towards other teams and drastically improved their performance throughout the duration of the tournament. The coaches were proud of the students that represented WZIS and will be excited to take the same team again next year.

    This season has been a developmental year for our basketball program at WZIS, next season we will have two squads ready to compete in both next years YEASA and QISN basketball events. We currently have two experienced basketball coaches which will ensure both squads will be prepared for next years competitions. Both students and staff are excited to celebrate the future successes of our basketball teams.

    House Competition – 2/24

    The volleyball competition between the houses ended with the Wolves taking the first place, followed by the Hawks, and the Moose holding up the rear for both the upper school and the primary school.

    1st day of Spring Semester – February 15, 2017

    Yes, it is Wednesday, the 15th of February. I hope you have enjoyed your Winter break.

    Now, it is time to return to school to finish this school year strong. Our classes will be on a modified schedule to accommodate for the opening ceremony and introducing teachers and classes to the students and the parents.

    After the Opening Ceremony, the morning half of the school day was utilized to explain the materials that will be covered during the Spring Semester with the students and parents. Students  and parents had the privilege of meeting their teachers and listening to their presentation of their course objectives and outlines.

    After lunch the afternoon officially began the Spring Semester with regular class schedule.

    G12 Graduation- 15th June, 2016

    On the 15th of June 2016, was a bitter-sweet day as we said farewell to our grade 12 students as they will leave WZIS and go onto university. This year we had twelve students that our graduating from our school some of which have been attending our school for almost twelve years.

    The most powerful evidence of a successful school is the quality of its graduates and universities that they are accepted into. We have been delighted to see many of our student’s progress to prestigious universities around the world. This year our 2016 graduates plan to go to universities in UK, USA & South Korea.

    We would like to wish our student the very best in their future in higher education. We hope you have enjoyed your journey with us and that you will remember your time in WZIS.

    Primary Science Fair- 10th June, 2016

    On the Friday the 10th of June, WZIS held it’s first ever primary science fair. The event was a huge success and the students enjoyed sharing their projects with: other students, teachers and parents. Next year primary will join the whole school science fair and compete with the rest of the school. A massive thank you to all who dedicated their time to make this event possible.

    This years first place was given to grade 5: Lucia, Miguel and James. Their project was investigating the separation of leaf pigments. All teachers appreciated the hard work spent on the project and were impressed with their knowledge on this topic.

    YEASA Sports Event- 4th June, 2016

    On Saturday 4th of June, WZIS hosted a YEASA sports event that over four hundred people attended. The day consisted of badminton, table tennis, basketball and a soccer tournament between all the schools. The day was full of nail biting competition for all students. This competition has facilitated not only growth in our athletes but also those students of which attended from other schools.

    WZIS claimed four trophies, three in soccer and one in badminton. The students and parents thoroughly enjoyed the day and are eager to attend the next event. We would like to take the opportunity to thank students, teachers, referees, coaches and parents that made this, such a special event.

    Math Conference- 21st May, 2016

    The Maths Teacher Conference held at Weihai Zhongshi International School (WZIS) gave area teachers an opportunity to share their experience and best practices.  Participants from Weihai Zhongshi International School, St. Paul’s American School, Yantai American School, and Yew Wah International School of Yantai can together in a spirit of cooperation in what will become an annual event at WZIS. The presenters at the conference included Mr. William Edgerton, the Dean of Academics at St. Paul American School 每 Yantai, Ms. Jamie Paquette of Yantai American School and Mr. Tobin Holden, Assistant Principal at WZIS.

    In the first session Mr. Edgerton presented on flipped classrooms and specifically, some of the tools and software to create maths videos.

    In the second session Mr. Holden lead a discussion on promoting mathematics in the school.  In this session the teachers shared their experience with maths contests and activities which allow for a heightened awareness and celebration of mathematics and maths achievement. The teachers also agreed to set up an event for students next academic year. The hosting school and event particulars will be announced later in the year.

    In the third session Ms. Paquette presented teaching strategies for English Language Learners.  In this interactive session Ms. Paquette introduced many activities to engage students who may struggle with the language of instruction from giving instructions, vocabulary acquisition and assessment strategies.

    Mr. Edgerton came back in the fourth session to present DESMOS, a free on-line graphing calculator.  Mr. Edgerton shared his experience using DESMOS and the participants got to play with the program under his tutelage.
