IGCSE
The IGCSE courses are designed to be studied over two years and build on the knowledge and skills that have been developed in middle school. They are assessed by final examinations in May/June of Grade 10, which are marked by external examiners from Cambridge. Students receive their results in August. IGCSEs provide the foundation of skills required to continue studying these subjects at advanced level, they also allow our students to compare their performance with their peers around the world. Students receive a grade from A*- U.
Our students in Grades 9-10 prepare for IGCSEs in 9 subjects:
English as a Second Language
This course is specifically designed for learners who are studying in an English language environment but are not native speakers. The course integrates the key skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening and exposes students to authentic written and spoken texts. Students learn to understand and produce written texts in different formats including letters and articles.
Assessment: Reading and Writing exam (2 hours), Listening exam (45 minutes), Speaking exam (15 minutes)
Mathematics
The IGCSE mathematics course offers an integrated approach to developing mathematical skills including geometry, statistics and algebra. Students solve both theoretical and applied questions.
Assessment: 2 x written examinations
Biology
The IGCSE biology course covers a range of topics in human, plant and animal biology. As well as their theoretical knowledge students also develop practical skills, including the use of microscopes.
Assessment: 2 x written examinations
Chemistry
The IGCSE chemistry course covers a range of topics in both organic and inorganic chemistry. Students also undertake many practical investigations during the course.
Assessment: 2 x written examinations
Physics
The Cambridge IGCSE Physics helps learners to understand the technological world in which they live, and take an informed interest in science and scientific developments. They learn about the basic principles of Physics through a mix of theoretical and practical studies.
Assessment: 3 x written examinations
History
IGCSE history students study a course based on early 20th Century history, mainly focused on Europe. They also conduct a depth study on Germany. One of the examinations focuses on students ability to interpret historical sources.
Assessment: 3 x written examinations
Geography
IGCSE geography covers both human and physical geography topics. Students also develop practical skills including map reading.
Assessment: 3 x written examinations
ICT
IGCSE ICT requires students to be familiar with several different programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. They also study the theory of networking and the different uses of computer technology in the modern world.
Assessment: 2 x practical examinations, 1 written examination
Business Studies
IGCSE Business Studies enable students to acquire knowledge and understanding of facts, terms, concepts, conventions, theories and techniques commonly applied to or used as part of business behavior. They are also taught how to analyse and evaluate information in order to make simple decisions as applied in business situations.
Assessment: 2 written examinations
Physical Education (PE)
IGCSE PE gives the students the opportunity to study both the practical and theoretical aspects of Physical Education. It is also designed to foster enjoyment in physical activity. The knowledge gained should enable candidates to develop an understanding of effective and safe physical performance.
Assessment: 1 written examination and one Course work
Chinese
In Grade 9 students continue preparing for different HSK levels in Chinese. In Grade 10 students prepare the the IGCSE examinations, which focus on everyday Chinese in a variety of different contexts.
Assessment: 1 reading examination, 1 listening examination, 1 writing examination, 1 speaking examination
